History

McGilley Memorial Chapel has a rich history in the Kansas City area that encompasses 3 different firms. The Eylar Brothers Undertakers was established in Kansas City in 1899. The firm of Mellody-Joyce-Taylor was established in the early 1920s, and became known as Mellody and McGilley in 1930, when James P. McGilley Sr. joined the firm. In 1944, Mr. McGilley purchased the Eylar Brothers Funeral Home and combined the companies at Linwood Boulevard and Woodland Street.

Ten years later, Mellody-McGilley-Eylar bought Quirk and Tobin Undertakers at Linwood Boulevard and Main Street and renamed it Mellody-McGilley-Eylar Funeral Home in 1957. During this time, Mellody-McGilley-Eylar also pioneered a simplified funeral planning process and offered financial payment options.

The funeral home at Linwood and Woodland closed in 1970, and the Linwood and Main location became known as the McGilley Midtown Chapel. In 1991, the McGilleys purchased 5 acres at 123rd and State Line Road, building a state-of-the-art funeral home named McGilley State Line Chapel.

Two generations of the McGilley family still serve the Kansas City community. Our legacy and traditions continue to provide families with cost-saving services, planning options, and immediate funeral, burial and cremation needs.
